About Us
Economic development of the Country especially the North Eastern region including Assam, solely depends on agriculture. Management of natural resources like land, water, environment, biodiversity etc. is major challenges. For development of the region and to bring it at par with the rest of the country, maximum emphasis needs to be given to Agriculture & Allied Sectors. Presently the region is still far behind the rest of the country in agricultural productivity, cropping intensity, irrigation, use of organics, fertilizers and pesticides, rain water harvesting, credit flow, marketing facilities, food processing, storage facilities, crop insurance, product diversification, value addition, use of Artificial Intelligence etc. Despite enormous potential with fertile land and surface water, the region in general and Assam in particular, is lagging far behind the Country’s average productivity of agricultural and horticultural crops. During the period of the last four years i.e. 2018-19 to 2021-22, Assam achieved an annual average growth rate of 10.26 per cent in terms of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) at current prices. Agriculture and allied sectors including horticulture, have been the major driving factor to boost the economy of the State. During 2020-21, the agriculture and allied sector achieved a favorable growth rate of 12.98 per cent as against (-) 4.69 per cent and (-) 1.52 per cent in the industry and service sectors respectively.
The entire North-east is facing the ramification of four major problems which pause challenges in feeding the teaming millions viz. population explosion, shrinkage of natural resources (Land & water), climate change and marketing. Moreover weaknesses of the primary sector are manifold. In Assam about 56% of cultivated area is still under mono-cropping. Subsistence farming is the predominant culture in Assam as small and marginal farmers comprise of about 86% with small and fragmented holding resulting in far low input: output ratio. Most of the cropped area (about 77.5%) is under rainfed conditions.
The region has tremendous potential for agri-horti sector with fertile land and abundant water resources, and use of frontier technology. With the implementation of Act East Policy the agri-horti produces and value added products can have good trade in ASEAN countries.
With a world that is growing in population, and also facing enormous environmental and economic challenges, the need for experts in all sectors, especially in Agriculture is increasing. Challenge is also bringing about newer and broader opportunities for well qualified and specialized agriculturists/horticulturists, especially in the North East India where agriculture and horticulture are essential part of livelihood and culture. The current lower graduate output, will create a shortage in future especially in organic farming, environmental agriculture, crop growing and agri/horti-trade.
Therefore, human resource development in the field of agriculture and horticulture is the priority need, and for this purpose, the need for establishment of more and more colleges of Agriculture and Horticulture in the state perhaps, need not be overemphasized. While the Public sector has lot of limitations, system rigidity and lot of formalities, the private sector has lot of flexibility and can run such HRD programs most efficiently and effectively.
And to fulfil that purpose, Daffodil College of Agriculture and Technology and Daffodil College of Horticulture are going to play a vital role in the years to come in fostering the development of agriculture and horticulture under the affiliation of the Assam Science and Technology University. The institution will increasingly function with a massive capacity of dedicated teachers devoting to produce the most efficient teaching and research forum for all aspects of agriculture and horticulture with greater emphasis on frontier technology, organic agriculture & horticulture, environmental impact and climate change. Such endeavour will allow specialization of individual students to concentrate on developing their subject area at the forefront of knowledge.
